Lakhisarai’s Kajra to Host India’s Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project

Expansion of Renewable Energy Initiatives: Bijendra Prasad Yadav

Patna, March 2 – Bihar is set to witness a major leap in renewable energy with the establishment of a 301 MW solar power project in Kajra, Lakhisarai. Expected to commence between July and August, this project will integrate high-capacity battery storage (495 MWh) to ensure uninterrupted power supply, particularly during peak hours and nighttime. The state cabinet has approved the initiative, and the tender process has already begun.

Government’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

Bihar’s Energy Minister, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, highlighted the state’s commitment to expanding renewable energy initiatives. He credited Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s visionary leadership for Bihar’s achievements in the energy sector. The state is now making significant strides in renewable energy to enhance power availability and sustainability.

Minister Yadav reiterated that Bihar is dedicated to increasing power generation capacity, promoting environmental conservation, and ensuring energy security. Upon completion, the Kajra solar projects will not only add 301 MW of green energy to Bihar’s grid but also establish India’s largest battery storage system of 495 MWh. This will provide uninterrupted and high-quality electricity to residents, help meet renewable energy obligations, and contribute to environmental conservation. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions and play a crucial role in combating climate change.

241 MWh Battery Storage to Enhance Energy Stability

As part of the initiative, a 241 MWh battery storage system is being set up, marking a significant achievement in Bihar’s renewable energy sector. This will contribute to the state’s self-sufficiency in energy production.

Project to Be Developed in Two Phases

The Kajra solar energy project will be executed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Development of 185 MW solar power capacity along with a 254 MWh battery storage system.
  • Phase 2: Development of an additional 116 MW solar power capacity along with a 241 MWh battery storage system.

Boost to Bihar’s Battery Storage Capacity

This project will significantly enhance Bihar’s total battery storage capacity, ensuring a more stable and efficient power supply, even during nighttime. The advanced battery storage system will make Bihar one of the leading states in energy storage technology, providing cost-effective and reliable power during peak hours. The initiative will also reduce dependency on fossil fuels and accelerate Bihar’s transition towards renewable energy.

Project to Be Developed on 80:20 Funding Model

The total cost of the new expansion project is ₹1,055.72 crore, while the existing Kajra solar energy project is being implemented at a cost of ₹1,810.34 crore. Both projects are being developed under an 80:20 financial model, with 80% funding from financial institutions and 20% through capital investment.

Land Acquisition and Project Implementation

A total of 1,232 acres of land has been acquired for the Kajra solar energy project. The implementation of Phase 1 has been assigned to Larsen & Toubro (L&T), with work progressing rapidly towards completion this year.

Promoting Clean Energy and Employment Opportunities

Aligned with Bihar’s flagship Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali initiative, these solar energy projects will serve as a milestone in the state’s renewable energy journey. Additionally, the project will generate employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers in construction, maintenance, and operations, benefiting the local economy.

This ambitious initiative reaffirms Bihar’s commitment to green energy and sustainable development, positioning the state as a leader in India’s renewable energy sector.
